Treatment of Sudden Hearing Loss
Sudden Deafness (also known as Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, or SSHL) is a sudden, unexplained loss of hearing in one ear, or both.
Sudden hearing impairment does not necessarily have to occur suddenly. However, it can develop gradually until one or both ears are completely deaf.
Sudden hearing loss should always be treated as a medical emergency and require immediate attention by specialists.
Many people with sudden hearing loss are reluctant to see a doctor, believing that it will heal on its own. It is dangerous to believe that sudden hearing loss can be treated by the doctor at a later date.
Most people who experience sudden hearing loss are affected by one ear. Sometimes, however, sudden hearing impairment can also be seen in both ears.
Diagnosis for Sudden Hearing Loss
Pure Tone Audiometry, a standard hearing test, can be used to diagnose sudden hearing loss. This test will determine if the loss is caused either by an obstruction in sound wave path like inner ear fluid or tumours, as well as neurological problems. This test can also be used to determine how much hearing loss you have in decibels. Hearing Aids in Jaipur
Sudden hearing loss is diagnosed when the test logs a loss at least 30 decibels in the three connected frequencies.
It is important to note that conversations at a regular pitch will sound less like a whisper if there is a 30 decibel loss in your hearing frequency.
Many people who experience sudden hearing loss are aware of the fact that they feel the loss when they first wake up one day.
However, some people discover their hearing loss by trying to use their deafened ears while speaking on phones or using other electronic devices.
Sudden hearing loss can also lead to sudden hearing loss.
Many people with sudden hearing loss report feeling dizzy, ringing in the ears and tinnitus.
This is due to neurological disturbances in balance centre, located in inner ear. A person who experiences sudden hearing loss may also experience a disorientation in their balance center, which can lead to dizziness, feeling of spinning and loss of balance.
Sudden Hearing Loss: Causes
There is almost always no identifiable cause for Sudden hearing loss. A mere 10-15% of sudden hearing losses are caused by a known cause.
These are the most common causes of sudden loss of hearing:
- Some infectious diseases can cause damage to the inner ear.
- Trauma caused by a head trauma
- Autoimmune diseases, such as Cogan's Syndrome
- An overdose of ototoxic drug, which is a drug that causes damage to the inner ear sensory nerves, can result in an irreversible injury.
- Blood circulation problems
- A tumor on the nerve connecting the brain to the ear.
- Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological disorders can be treated with medication.
- Meniere's Disease and other inner ear diseases are some examples.

Corticosteroids, which are used to treat sudden hearing loss in cases where there is no explanation, are the most popular treatment. Digital Hearing Aids in Jaipur
Doctors often prescribe steroids to treat various diseases and disorders.
Steroids are used to reduce inflammation, decrease swelling, and aid the body's immune systems to fight off most viral infections.
Although steroids are often prescribed in pill form, intratympanic Corticosteroid Therapy, which is a direct injection-based therapy, has become increasingly popular in recent times.
This is where the corticosteroids, which are in liquid form, are injected behind your eardrum into your middle ear.
Patients who are otherwise not able to take oral steroids might also benefit from intraatympanic Corticosteroid Therapy.
